The Benefits of Stamped Concrete & Why You Should Consider Stamped Concrete for Your Driveway
What is Stamped Concrete?
Stamped concrete is concrete that is patterned and/or textured / embossed to resemble brick, stone, tile, wood, or various other materials. Stamped concrete is commonly used by concrete companies for patios, sidewalks, driveways, pool decks, and interior flooring. Contractors and clients alike, appreciate stamped concrete for its ability to resemble and often outlast prohibitively expensive materials like stone and slate.
Stamped Concrete has been around since the 1950s. It saw a large increase in popularity in the 1970s after being featured in “World of Concrete”. Concrete companies and Concrete contractors were excited about stamped concrete as it was a new method to satisfy their customers, while simultaneously lowering their costs. In the early days of stamped concrete, there were few options as far as design and color. As the industry progressed, so grew the options available to customers looking for top-quality designs and aesthetic appeal for an affordable price. Now, the possibilities are endless. There are a wide variety of stamped concrete patterns and stains available to be used on many different types of surfaces including driveways, roads, patios, decks and even indoor floors.
How Stamped Concrete is Made & Differences from Standard Concrete
There are 3 processes that define stamped concrete.
The addition of a base color to the concrete
The addition of an accent color to the concrete
The stamping of a pattern into the concrete
Adding base color to your stamped concrete
The base color is the primary color used in stamped concrete. The base color is chosen to reflect the color of the natural building material such as brick, stone, etc.. We produce the base color by adding a color hardener to the concrete. Color hardener is a powder pigment used to dye the stamped concrete.
Adding accent color to your stamped concrete
Accent colors are the secondary color used in stamped concrete. The secondary color is used to produce texture and show additional building materials, for example grout, in the stamped concrete. The accent color is produced by applying color release to the concrete. Color release has two purposes.Firstly, it is a pigment used to color the stamped concrete.Secondly, it is a non-adhesive used to prevent the concrete stamps from sticking to the concrete.
Concrete Stamping Patterns
The stamping pattern is the shape of the surface of the stamped concrete. The pattern reflects the shape of the natural building material (brick, stone, etc.). The pattern is made by imprinting the concrete shortly after it has been poured with a "concrete stamp".
In most cases concrete stamping is made to look like ordinary building products such as flagstone, brick, natural stone, etc.
Combined, these processes allow stamped concrete to resemble more expensive materials, like paved stone, while significantly cutting costs, and providing more durability and life to projects. Especially those projects which experience heavy use and exposure like concrete driveways.
Stamped Concrete Benefits
Natural stone tiles are a popular choice for many homeowners due to their natural beauty. Unfortunately for homeowners and contractors alike, these stones can be prohibitively expensive.
Thankfully, stamped concrete allows us to get the same beautiful look and feel of stone, brick, slate, and other materials, for an affordable price!
At Texan Concrete Specialist, our stamped concrete’s natural and authentic design allows us to easily blend our stamped concrete with your existing stone, tile, or even other stamped concrete. Also, our stamped concrete is quickly and easily installed. That means less time, less money, and less unnecessary upheaval and mess, for you!
Another benefit of stamped concrete over other expensive materials like stone and tile is how easy it is to maintain! Not to mention the added durability of stamped concrete.
Other materials require constant maintenance to prevent cracks, fading, and other damage. Stamped concrete also has no joints or spaces, leaving no room for weeds!
The only maintenance for stamped concrete is occasionally sweeping and washing to avoid dirt and grime buildup. With minimal cleaning and maintenance, stamped concrete will look amazing for decades.
